As part of the Water Security initiative, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in partnershipwith the City of Cincinnati deployed a drinking water contamination warning system for the GreaterCincinnati Water Works (GCWW). Significant implementation activities were completed in July 2007.Additional demonstration pilots will be selected through a competitive, cooperative agreement grantprocess. With significant implementation activities complete at the initial pilot and plans for additionaldemonstration pilots in progress, the focus of EPA’s efforts is shifting from implementation activities toevaluation. Evaluation of the operation, performance, and sustainability of the Water Security initiativepilots is a key aspect of the program to inform guidance development and promote the adoption of thecontamination warning system concept by drinking water utilities throughout the nation. In addition, evaluation also plays a key role for utilities in the contamination warning system deployment process.
