SPACE CAPSULE RECOVERY EXPERIMENT PROJECT - MISSION OVERVIEW

The Space Capsule Recovery Experiment module (SRE-1), the first Indian venture of its kind, re-entered the earth's atmosphere and was successfully recovered near Chennai in Bay of Bengal on 22nd January 2007, at 9:27 (IST). The module was injected into 635 km Sun Synchronous Polar Circular Orbit before onboard PSLV C7. It has helped to develop and demonstrate de-orbit, reentry and recovery technology. It has also provided a low cost platform for conducting long duration microgravity experiments in orbit. The paper highlights the development of the capsule, overall mission, critical technologies involved, and challenges & achievements and preliminary flight results.
