To remain competitive in today's global market, it is crucial to manage information efficiently. Most plants have a lot of data; using modern tools, it is now possible to convert this data into results and diagnostics. To control strategic process variables and optimize the usage of human resources, specific methodologies must be adopted. Managers must ensure that all resources are affected where they are the most needed so that they generate added value; process control equipments must be maintained in an optimal state so that they provide the best performance; and final products must be produced at least cost. The definition of performance varies accordingly to sectors. Using the data efficiently leads to reduction in cost of energy and better stability. Once gains have been done, it is essential to make efforts in order to maintain the new level of performance. Otherwide, it will decline gradually because of various factors. A quantified plant example is presented.
