LESSONS LEARNT OF OF EU 1000 SCHOOL PROGRAMME1999-2002 IN SOUTH AFRICA

The subject of the evaluation is the project “Non-Grid Electrification of 1000 Rural Schools” fundedby the European Union (EU) as a contribution by the EU towards implementing an existing government programmeto supply non-grid electricity to 16,400 schools in remote parts of South Africa. The project started 1997 and wascompleted 5 years later in 2002, due to many obstacles and problems in the project. The final evaluation was made inmarch 2006, and have found a lot of things to be learned for the future projects of this kind. Of the visited schools inLimpopo 50% of the systems were still working, of which 11% with minor problems, and corresponding numbers inEastern Cape 58% and 15% with some problems.
