Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is a gram-positive, facultative intracellular pathogen that can cause erysipelas in a variety of animals. We developed the E. rhusiopathiae YS-1 strain for use as a live vaccine vector by disrupting a gene for capsule biosynthesis and developed the E. rhusiopathiae YS-19 expressing on the cell surface a recombinant protein of the C-terminal portion of the Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae P97 adhesin. A previous study revealed that pigs intranasally vaccinated with the YS-19 strain significantly reduced the severity of pneumonic lung lesions caused by M. hyopneumoniae infection; however, P97-specific serum antibodies were not detected in YS-19-immunized pigs. In this study, we analyzed cell-mediated immune responses to the P97 antigen in pigs intranasally or intradermally vaccinated with E. rhusiopathiae YS-19 strain.
