A dedicated spray process has recently been developed for the production of heavy layers made of filled PU with high specific weight materials (barite, iron oxide etc). This new application represents a suitable and real alternative to the commonly available RIM processes, which require high investments in complex and expensive hardware (molds and presses). By applying this technology, it is now possible to spray a polyurethane heavy layer directly into an open mold, which then moves into a press to be back-foamed in a closed mold by injecting flexible low-density PU. The flexibility to spray the filled compound only where needed, achieving a layer with differentiated thicknesses, offers the unique and unbeatable opportunity to optimize the use of raw materials and achieve significant cost savings.
