ENERGY AUDITING OF A LARGE SHOPPING MALL: A CASE STUDY FROM SAUDI ARABIA

Shopping malls play an important role in the social and economic life in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), and the Middle East in general. However, they represent a major contributor to the increasing demand on electricity. In this paper an energy audit of Granada Shopping Mall, the largest shopping mall in Riyadh is presented. The audit focused on establishing the load balance of the mall to better understand how energy is consumed and the significance of saving opportunities in different systems. It was demonstrated that although numerous savings opportunities exist in the lighting system, attention should be focused on the HVAC system. Low cost recommendations including proper monitoring, operation, and maintenance of the HVAC system, can result in annual savings of over 4,480 MWh. The recommended savings represent around 8% of the total energy consumption, with an overall payback period of less than 4 months.
