Enhance Safety and Efficiency of Transportation on Conventional Roads with ATIS in Developing Countries: the Chinese Experience

Compared with the freeways or expressways, many conventional roads in developing countries face the difficulties to provide aa safe and efficient transportation service for the limits of road facilities, power supplies and detection devices, etc. The main reason of this situation is lack of funds. The aim of the study was to create aa process of setting up aa basic Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS) for this kind of roads to provide the traffic information as much as possible for the travelers with aa low cost. In this paper, the steps of establishing aa low cost ATIS for the Nanjing-Zhenjiang-Changzhou-Wuxi-Suzhou (NZCWS) road, which is part of 312 National Road in China, were proposed. This experience can be applied to the roads with the similar conditions in the other developing countries.
