Experience and Challenge of Heavy Oil Development by Steam Injection in Shengli Petroliferous Province

There are many significant heavy oil resources with original oil in place (OOIP) of more than 0.4 billion tons in Shengli petroliferous province. The oil viscosity ranges from 1O00mPa.s to 500000mPa.s (dead oil viscosity in 50°C). It is difficult to develop these reservoirs due to the depositional depth (from 900m to 2400m), active edge and bottom water. Annual heavy oil production has been increased 22.3 million tons in 2005 in Shengli by infill drilling, changing waterflood of conventional heavy oil to CSS, the technological improvement in horizontal drilling, and the technological breakthrough in extra heavy oil and strong water sensitive heavy oil reservoir development. The development of heavy oil reservoir in Shengli petroliferous province will face challenges in producing from complicated reservoirs with high water cut in late development stage, super heavy oil reservoirs and multi-layer thin-bed heavy oil reservoirs etc. This paper reviews the characteristics of heavy oil resources in Shengli and the recent technological advancement in development of heavy oil reservoirs. This article analyses the challenges and outlook the development trend of heavy oil reservoir in Shengli petroliferous province.
