This paper provides analysis and comparisons of different techniques used to reduce a systems standby power consumption. This paper will review the circuits within a switch mode power supply (SMPS) that consume the majority of the power along with methods to calculate their power dissipation, and ways to reduce their affect.The methods for reducing standby power that will be explored in this article are: frequency foldback, skip cycle,the effect of different types of start-up circuits, and switching losses.
