Removal of Calcium and other Metal Species from Crude Oil in theDesalting Process, Part 2

This article is an update of the 2004 AIChE paper entitled "Removal of Calcium andother Metal Species from Crude Oil in the Desalting Process" (Ref 1). Some crudeoils from West Africa, the North Sea, China and other locations have sufficientlyhigh levels of calcium naphthenate to cause product quality and operationalconcerns at some refineries. Use of specialized chemistry converts calcium intoa water soluble species that can be removed in the desalter. Several successfulfield applications will be discussed. There are several application detailsinvolving metals removal programs that need to be considered before beginningan application in the refinery.
