In today's competitive automotive market, noise vibration and harshness (NVH) or more specifically interior quietness with windows open and closed has become a critical marketing characteristic. Automotive Companies have seen that open window noise, often described as helicopter noise or open window wind throb, has a significant influence on overall customer satisfaction. This paper explores various design alternatives targeted at reducing the sound pressure level (SPL) resulting from the wind throb phenomenon. Some of these designs involve treatments to the exterior side of the vehicle, integrated logic for window switches, tuning of the opening to eliminate standing waves, and increasing the controlled airflow. The wind throb event has been studied using on-road data to understand the effect of crosswinds.
