SCIENTOMETRIC STUDY ON CHINESE RESEARCH IN INFORMATION SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

The purpose of this study is to measure the research performance of key projects in information science funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), based on the data in the period 1994-2001. Three indicators—SCI papers (SCI-PAP), Impact factors (SCI-IF), and Relative Impact Factor (RIF)—are employed to measure the scientific output of the key projects from quantity and quality perspectives. The findings indicate that, as a whole, the research performances of the key projects have considerably increased year by year during the study period. In terms of the research performance, there are striking and significant differences amongst sub-disciplines and within individual sub-discipline. Another important finding reveals that, however, the investment strength in the key projects is not sensitive and positive related to the research performance and heavier investment in the key projects alone cannot lead to higher research performance at all.
