A Method for Calculating the Maximum Passenger Assembling Number of Railway Passenger Station

As the construction of the high-speed passenger lines have been putting into practice in China, there will be a lot of new railway passenger stations going to be built. So it is very necessary to study the theories on building railway passenger stations. The maximum passenger assembling number (MPAN) is the key parameter to design the capacity of a railway passenger station. The paper investigates the existing methods for calculating the MPAN, which include assembled coefficient method, graph method and train numbers of single way method, and analyze their disadvantages in calculation. Then it puts forward 3 new methods, namely probability method, worst-situation method and simulation method, moreover, gives the suggested value of their parameters. The probability method uses the passenger's arrival probability in unit time to calculate the MPAN; the worst-situation Method consider the worst situation such as the trains departure densely in a short period of time for finding the MPAN; the simulation method uses PC program to simulate the passenger assembling process and calculate the MPAN. Finally, the paper tests the 3 new methods with the cases of Beijing West Station, Beijing Station, Guangzhou East Station and Zhangmutou Station. The results show that the 3 new methods are more effective in the MPAN calculation than the existing methods.
