The capital construction of the second phased Yangtze estuary deepwater channel dredging engineering commenced in Jan, 2004, the total length of the channel reach 74.471km, bottom breadth 350~400 m, the designed depth is 10.0m under chart datum. After 15 months capital dredging, till March 29, 2005, the average channel depth reached 10.68m. Comparing the first phased channel construction, the second phased channel has the character of twice times dredging amount, tightly construction period, highly pressure on environmental protection and channel safety operation. Aim at above character, basing on the summarized experience for the successfully implement of the first phased channel construction and uninterrupted river pattern variety monitor & analysis, we achieved success on engineering commenced time choice, the settlement for stages water depth object, dredging safety management for one operation busy channel and environmental protection etc. On June 16 in 2005, the 10.0m depth channel was announced trial operation and announced formally operation on November 21 in 2005. The second phased channel has obtained good socioeconomic performance. Basing on the successful completion of the second phased project, we are accelerated propelling the project that extending Yangtze Estuary deep water channel to upper stream. Firstly synchronously opening 10.5m depth channel to Nanking, this project has been finished and announced formally operation on November 21 in 2005. The third stage project that will deepen Yangtze Estuary deepwater channel to 12.5m in three years construction period will be carried into execution in 2006.
