The carbon membranes were prepared by consecutive steps consisting of preoxidation, heating and cooling after theployphenylene oxide (PPO) polymer was coated on the macroporous alumina ceramic membranes. In this study, the effects ofdifferent preparation conditions on the gas permeation proprties were investigated with different PPO concentration. It wasobserved in the permeation results that the gas transport through the prepared carbon membrane was mainly controlled by themolecular sieving effect. And the highest permeation performance was observed at the concentration of 3 wt%. It was shownthat the PPO derived carbon membrane has been successful in achieving promising materials for gas separation as indicatedby the closeness to the upper bound line in selectivity and permeabililty.
