The annotations of the Penn DiscourseTreebank (PDTB) include (1) discourseconnectives and their arguments, and (2)attribution of each argument of each connectiveand of the relation it denotes. Becausethe PDTB covers the same text asthe Penn TreeBank WSJ corpus, syntacticand discourse annotation can be compared. This has revealed significant differencesbetween syntactic structure anddiscourse structure, in terms of the argumentsof connectives, due in large part toattribution. We describe these differences,an algorithm for detecting them, and finallysome experimental results. These resultshave implications for automating discourseannotation based on syntactic annotation.
