Newly Designed Polyol Systems for Rigid Polyurethane Foam with Non-HFC Blowing Agents

According to the worldwide regulation against global warming materials, in the protocol of the conference held by the United Nations concerned with climate change, it is desired to substitute low GWP blowing agents for polyurethane foam such as hydrocarbons and water, for high GWP blowing agents such as HFC materials. As such non-HFC blown systems are adopted by many foam manufacturers. In this paper, we focus on new polyol systems that give excellent processability and maintain the hardness of the lower density rigid foam for the insulation materials applied to construction and refrigerators. The newly designed polyol systems “Sanyo EXCELFLOW series” make the optimized balance between hardness and processability of the foam at lower density, and give better appearance of the non-HFC blown foam compared with conventional polyols. Simultaneously these systems have low viscosity to improve processability foaming, and are highly crosslinked materials to keep the hardness of the foam at lower density. For example, these systems have over four functional groups and show the viscosity of only 5000mPa?s at 25oc. By using these systems, we can manufacture the low density cyclopentane blown foam (27kg/m3) with 0.18MPa compressive strength (parallel to rise at 10% deflection). For the means mentioned above, these polyol systems enable excellent foam performance to be obtained with low GWP blowing agents.
