Oblique Wave Disturbance Analysis ofSupersonic Flow Past Axisymmetric and2D Bodies at Angles of Attack

Boundary layer stability analysis performed through application of the parabolized stability equations (PSE) has been shown to provide accurate calculations of second-mode two-dimensional wave disturbances.~1 For supersonic flows, between approximately Mach one and five, two-dimensional wave disturbances are usually not the most unstable disturbance inside a boundary layer, and the oblique wave disturbance, which is an extension of the Tollmien-Schlichting instability in incompressible flows, commonly becomes the most amplified disturbance. This paper demonstrates the use of the STABL software suite to calculate accurate first or second-mode oblique wave disturbances. Calculated oblique wave amplification rates and wave angles show very good agreement to previously-published data of supersonic flow over flat plates and cylinders. This analysis is then extended to a blunt wedge at angles of attack to show the impact on the stability results when testing for oblique and two-dimensional disturbances.
