Waste production and footprint are important considerations in the design of any industrial water treatment plant. Many industrial water treatment facilities use lime softening to reduce hardness, suspended solids, silica and other potential foulants in their cooling water, boiler feed and other process water systems. A recently developed package plant combines solids contact reaction and sludge thickening in a single tank. This design eliminates transfer pumps, interconnecting piping, valves and instruments while reducing overall footprint. The process, along with pilot-scale and full-scale results, will be discussed.
