Boundaries created by the interface of dissimilar materials within the ultrasonic signal path of flowinstrumentation cause an ultrasonic wave to be subjected to attenuation, reflection, and refraction. Theseeffects can be compensated for in the design of the transducer and its associated instrumentation.Multiple interfaces exist in a conventional ultrasonic flow measurement setup. Connecting ultrasonictransducers to the exterior of pipe typically complicates the interface issue, and setup and calibrationtime for this type of instrumentation is substantial. Investigations have been initiated in an effort toexamine ultrasonic wave boundary interfaces, in order to develop new coupling methods andmeasurement techniques. Initial investigations have been conducted in the area of ultrasonic signals andtransducer characterizations with the development of test configurations. Discoveries of theseinvestigations will be used to create manageable designs of future ultrasonic measurementinstrumentation.
