A model is described that is capable of simulating in detail thetime variation of formation pressures measured while drilling,in situations where supercharging is significant. Simulationresults are shown that illustrate the variation of superchargingpressures with formation permeability, drilling fluid filtrationproperties, and drilling fluid hydraulics. The model is used toexplore how drilling operations influence the levels ofsupercharging when drilling two formations, widely separatedalong the well trajectory, and of significantly differentpermeabilities. The forward simulation capability presented isbelieved to be a useful aid to the planning, understanding andinterpretation of formation pressure measurements whiledrilling.
