COMPARATIVE STUDY OF VENTILATION STRATEGIES FOR A RESIDENTIAL AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM

Driven by building energy performance standards, residential buildings are becoming more and more airtight.Therefore, ventilation in residential buildings is becoming of significant concern. Two kinds of ventilation strategies were applied respectively to an air-duet-type residential central air conditioning (A/C) system which included a variable-speed compressor with inverter and a multi-speed air handler fan. In one of the strategies, the ventilation damper was controlled according to the carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration of space air to realize intermittent ventilation. In another strategy, outdoor air was inhaled into the habitable space continuously at a fixed minimum flow rate specified by ASHRAE Standard 62.2P. Using a validated simulation model for the A/C system,these two ventilation strategies were compared in detail herein. From the comparative study it can be concluded that for such a residential A/C system, the intermittent ventilation strategy based on CO2 concentration not only is acceptable, but also can achieve great energy-saving.
