For pre-combustion decarbonisation of fuels for large-scale power production or H_2 generation both CO_2 and H_2 selective membranes are viable candidates for use in steam reforming and water gas shift membrane reactors. It will be shown that the choice between either option is not a matter of taste, but dictated by the fuel used and, to a lesser extent, the total system layout. Hydrotalcites, clay-like materials, are shown to be promising candidates as membrane material for low temperature, below 400°C, membrane shift reactors.
