The Pearl River Mouth Basin aquifer is vast but only small hydrocarbon fields are present in proximal areas. Some of them are not filled to spill which could be due to poor cap rock quality. The sustainable CO2 column heights of the HZ21-1 field were calculated to estimate the CO2 storage capacity. If the lack of large hydrocarbon fields is due to insufficient cap rocks, CO2 storage capacity estimations based on volumetrics for the aquifer will lead to a capacity overestimation. Instead, hydrocarbon fields and additional storage capacity in the overburden due to dispersed trapping should be considered.
