This paper examines the software and system safety of integrating a military missile system with an UnmannedAerial Vehicle (UAV) that was originally designed for surveillance and reconnaissance. The initial assessment wasthat critical to catastrophic hazards would plague the weapon system. After analyzing each subsystem and itsrelated software, it was deemed that most subsystems could remain isolated to deter modal failures, the first steptowards achieving a successfully engineered weapon system. By integrating application specific software andhardware across safety critical functions, the MQ-1 Predator utilizes simple straight forward system logic. The MQ-1 Predator is relatively a safe, effective, and affordable weapon system to meet future military and terrorist threats.
