A new application of the solidification/stabilization process (S/S) has beendeveloped for the remediation of the “Conterie” in Murano, an area highly contaminatedby the uncontrolled discharges of heavy metal containing wastes from artistic glass productionsin the past. By using an intensive mixer system and by applying the criteria forthe production of High Performance Concrete (HPC), the contaminated soil is transformedin very dense, low porous and mechanically resistant cement pellets, which canbe reused for the filling of the excavations and for other nonstructural uses. The low porosityof the pellets strongly reduces the leaching of heavy metals and the new material,after curing, fully comply with the Italian environmental regulations for the reusablematerials. Furthermore, it has been observed that the mineralogical composition of thesoil, rich in clayey material, favours the consumption of calcium hydroxide produced bythe cement hydration and consequently improves the durability of the final material. The“Conterie” project represents an interesting, “high- tech” application of the S/S process,specifically adapted to be applied in the fragile venetian environment.
