In response to the need for a higher energy density power source for the Land Warrior system, Ultralife Batteries Inc. (UBI), in conjunction with US Army CERDEC, has developed a hybrid power source that provides in excess of 200 Wh/kg when discharged under the Land Warrior IC pulse load profile. The hybrid system is made up of three components: a zinc-air primary battery, a lithium ion or lithium polymer rechargeable battery and a cable that connects the two energy sources. The performance of the hybrid system was examined with 7 Ah, 9Ah, and 10Ah rechargeable power sources, in various states of charge. The program was successful in demonstrating the advantages of load sharing between the hybrid power source components, the effect of the hybrid system on the Land Warrior system battery state of charge monitoring, and the ability for a hybrid system to provide in excess of 200Wh/kg in a four-pound system. Finally, a cursory safety assessment was completed to verify the inherent safety of the hybrid system and cable design.
