A series of copper(I) complexes of melamine (2,4,6-triamino-1,3,5-triazine), thiourea, and N,N′- ethylenethiourea have been prepared. These compounds have been examined by thermogravimetry. Those decomposing at elevated temperatures have been tested as potential smoke suppressants and flame retardants in poly(vinyl chloride). The smoke suppression and fire retardancy behavior of these copper(I) and copper(II) additives is compared to that of simple copper salts. These copper(I) compounds appear to be fairly weak smoke suppressants and fire retardants
