An apparatus for performing simultaneous differential scanning calorimetry / synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction, consisting of a hermeticallysealed and water-cooled sample enclosure based on a Perkin-Elmer DSC measuring head and a Perkin-Elmer Pyris 1 DSC electronics, has been developed. The apparatus has been successfully tested and then employed in multiple experiments involving real-life samples at the MR-CAT beam line at the Advanced Photon Source of the Argonne National Laboratory. The results indicate that simultaneous differential scanning calorimetry / synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction is a valuable analytical technique applicable to a wide range of problems where an extremely accurate correlation of thermal and structural data is being sought. The apparatus could be replicated at a number of synchrotron facilities and (with decreased DSC scanning rates) at any laboratory equipped with a rotating anode XRD instrument.
