Carbon fiber reinforced composite bearing retainers were developed for high-speed bearing applications. A lightweight, high-temperature, low-expansion composite retainer holds the key to reducing the heat generation and in improving bearing reliability in highspeed systems. The experimental results show that C-C cages offer substantial reduction in heat generation compared to metal cages at the same operating conditions, and C-C cages enable much higher DN (rpm x shaft diameter in mm) operation in the absence of liquid lubrication.
