An instrumentation and control system was recently developed at the Arnold EngineeringDevelopment Center (AEDC) to improve positioning accuracy and operating reliabilityof the 16-Foot Transonic (16T) flexible nozzle in AEDC’s Propulsion Wind Tunnel(PWT) facility. Precise measurement of the 16T Nozzle wall contour is key to obtainingthe desired tunnel test conditions. Coordinated control is necessary to prevent damage tothe nozzle and thereby avoid costly repair and loss of test time. To minimize risk andreduce development time, a hardware- in-the- loop simulation of the flexible nozzle wasimplemented.
