An instrumentation and control system was recently developed at the Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) to improve positioning accuracy and operating reliability of the 16-Foot Transonic (16T) flexible nozzle in AEDC's Propulsion Wind Tunnel (PWT) facility. Precise measurement of the 16T Nozzle wall contour is key to obtaining the desired tunnel test conditions. Coordinated control is necessary to prevent damage to the nozzle and thereby avoid costly repair and loss of test time. To minimize risk and reduce development time, a hardware- in-the- loop simulation of the flexible nozzle was implemented.
