Progress Toward an Atomic Fluorescence Temperature Transfer Standard

We describe recent tests aimed at eventually realizing a metrological qualityfluorescence-based temperature measurement system. The main advance here is thesubstitution of a deep-blue light emitting diode for a laser source. In this instance, thefluorescing material is crystalline Y2O3:Eu. The measurements range from ambient to800 C. The signal to noise demonstrated is adequate for precise temperaturemeasurement and the expected sensitivity from 600 to 800 C is observed. In addition,some temperature dependence of emission amplitude between ambient and 600 C wasmeasured. Overall, the results are a significant step toward accomplishing viable,inexpensive precision thermometry.
