摘要

Fuel system ballistic tolerance is an area that has been typically addressed through the incorporation of self-sealing fuel cells both for main and auxiliary fuel systems. However, this is only one part of the vulnerability equation. A major explosive and catastrophic risk is still present from the penetration of fuel tank ullages by Armor Piercing Incendiary (API) and 23 mm High Explosive Incendiary (HEI) rounds. This is a critical area of concern considering the large volume taken up by fuel tanks on most aircraft platforms. This is an especially crucial area in rotary wing aircraft as they are constantly employed in the low altitude battlespace and are thus exposed to a significantly higher risk to enemy ground fire and atmospheric conditions, which make vapors extremely volatile. Implementing an On-Board Inert Gas Generating System/ On-Board Oxygen Generating System (OBIGGS/OBOGS) will provide an aircraft and it?s crew with a complimentary technology to self sealing fuel tanks that will provide a significant level of protection through vulnerability reduction associated with highly explosive and oxygen rich fuel tank vapors. It also provides the crew with an intuitively highly reliable oxygen system meeting real-time oxygen requirements for higher altitudes, without the use of LOX. The OBIGGS/OBOGS system, currently on the V-22 aircraft, is a unique product benefiting the aircraft and crew with one system that provides both fuel tank protection and a constant flow of oxygen. This niche product reduces the logistical requirements of having both systems on board, utilizing valuable space on the aircraft. This presentation will review the benefits of having two life saving systems in one. It will cover design issues and logistical requirements as well as the consistent positive results of this unit on the V-22 aircraft.
