Towards a Holistic Perspective on Environmentally Sustainable Behavior: A Method for Linking Travel Attitudes with Electricity Consumption Data

Human behavior has been well recognized to have a significant influence on energy consumption both indoors and outdoors. Traditionally, these behaviors have been investigated separately as occupant behavior and travel behavior. However, as human activity patterns are interconnected and our choices as travelers or occupants vary spatially and temporally, there is a need to understand the link between travel and occupant behavior and how they are affected by various factors both directly and indirectly. This paper presents a methodology that aims to identify the possible linkages between travel and occupant behavior by combining individually measured electricity consumption data with survey data on travel attitudes. Through the proposed methodology, we aim to investigate how a long-term energy intervention in the office environment affects occupants' attitudes towards energy-efficient travel. A study applying the methodology will be started in the University of Washington campus in October 2015.
