In November 2002, the DOE, recognizing the continuing need for a coal feeding solutionfor gasification and PFBC systems, funded a project to elevate operation of the uniqueStamet “Posimetric Solids Pump” to current system operating pressures. The objectiveof the project is a mechanical rotary device for continuously feeding coal intopressurized environments of at least 500 pounds per square inch. This is the levelcurrently used for advanced gasification and PFBC systems. This paper reviews theproject results to date. The “Posimetric” concept, in previous DOE funded research,achieved continuous feeding of coal into gas pressures exceeding 250 PSI, making itthe first mechanically powered, continuous “pump” to achieve solids injection at thispressure level. The technology grew out of efforts in the 1970’s to commercializeproduction of oil from oil shale. Tosco Corporation patented the initial concept, laterlicensed and developed by Stamet for feeding into significant gas pressures.
