The paper considers the issues of justifying the advisability of placing the objects of nuclear technologies (Ntobjects) in the territories of Belarus contaminated by the Chernobyl accident. A paramount aim of ongoing studies is a socio-economic rehabilitation of the territories with the surface radionuclide contamination up to 555 kBq/m2. To this end a methodology and an integrated computer system based on the digital mapping have been developed for ranking the territories as per levels of a complex anthropogenic burden to man and environment. The ongoing studies can be now supported by the developed knowledge bases comprising data on the state of natural environments, and thus available for specifying a limit of anthropogenic burden upon the territories and forecasting the radiation situation developed due to the natural radioactive decay and the effect of NT-objects planned for siting in the contaminated territories. The paper highlights the positive factors arising from siting NT-objects in contaminated territories such as conquering the public phobia of spreading contamination further to noncontaminated areas, shortening the period of rehabilitation and returning a socio-economic status to the region.
