ACRYLIC PROCESS AIDS FOR PVC: FROMTHEORETICAL CONCEPTS TO PRACTICAL USE

Acrylic process aids have been widely used for decades in the production of both rigid andflexible PVC materials. Their advantages are well known and will be briefly reminded in thepaper. Excessive use of process aids, selection of the wrong molecular weights, may howeverlead to undesirable behaviors ultimately resulting in defects in PVC materials. These limitationswill be discussed in details, explained based on general polymer science considerations. Somecriteria to optimize the proper selection of the level and nature of process aid to be used in PVCformulations will be given in relation to the final application, such as films, window and foamprofiles, pipes…
