BRIDJE over a Language Barrier:Cross-Language Information Accessby Integrating Translation and Retrieval

This paper describes two new features ofthe BRIDJE system for cross-languageinformation access. The first feature isthe partial disambiguation function ofthe Bi-directional Retriever, which canbe used for search request translation incross-language IR. Its advantage over a"black-box" machine translation approachis consistent across five test collectionsand across two language permutations:English-Japanese and Japanese-English.The second new feature is the InformationDistiller, which performs interactivesummarisation of retrieved documentsbased on Semantic Role Analysis. Ourexamples illustrate the usefulness ofthis feature, and our evaluation resultsshow that the precision of Semantic RoleAnalysis is very high.
