BRIDJE over a Language Barrier:Cross-Language Information Accessby Integrating Translation and Retrieval

This paper describes two new features ofrnthe BRIDJE system for cross-languagerninformation access. The first feature isrnthe partial disambiguation function ofrnthe Bi-directional Retriever, which canrnbe used for search request translation inrncross-language IR. Its advantage over arn"black-box" machine translation approachrnis consistent across five test collectionsrnand across two language permutations:rnEnglish-Japanese and Japanese-English.rnThe second new feature is the InformationrnDistiller, which performs interactivernsummarisation of retrieved documentsrnbased on Semantic Role Analysis. Ourrnexamples illustrate the usefulness ofrnthis feature, and our evaluation resultsrnshow that the precision of Semantic RolernAnalysis is very high.
