Buccoadhesive tablets of lignocaine hydrochlride, each containing 15 mg of lignocaine HC1, using various Carbopol-974 P (CP-974P) polymer combinations with HPMC-K4 M, SCMC (DVP), sodium alginate, Guar gum, HPC-M, Eudragit RS-100 and Eudragit NE -30 in different ratios were prepared. The tablets were subjected to in-vitro dissolution rate studies, in-vitro permeation studies, in-situ release studies and invitro swelling studies. The polymer combination of CP-974 P & SCMC (DVP) released almost 75.92% over 6 hours, greater than the other polymers combinations, in invitro release studies. The surface pH and bioadhesive strength of this formulation was also satisfactory. Total time of adhesion ideally desired was achieved. In-situ release studies revealed that the drug concentration remained well above the MEC, within the therapeutic range period of 6 hours.
