OVERVIEW ON THE PATHOGENESIS OF DIABETES AND ITS IDEAL TREATMENT; MITOCHONDRIAL PERPSECTIVE

摘要

Ideal treatment of diabetes is not only normalizing blood glucose by restoring beta cell function, but should aim at restoring mitochondrial function or mtDNA density, preventing decline of mitochondrial function, and correcting abnormal mtDNA mutations, and as yet unknown body changes associated with insulin deficiency and insulin resistance. Diabetes could be better understood and treated if we see it as a disease of mitochondrion, not as a disease of glucose.
