Effect of material nonlinearity of soil on kinematic response of single piles is investigated. An advanced plasticity based soil model, HiSS, is incorporated in the finite element formulation. Proper boundary conditions are considered for simulating radiation condition at infinity. Seismic excitations consisting of simple harmonic motion as well as transient motion are considered in the analyses. The model and algorithm is verified with available analytical results for an elastic soil model. The effects of nonlinearity on free field response and on pile head response are investigated. For harmonic excitation, the effects of frequency of excitation are studied. It was found that the effect of nonlinearity is greater on the free field response as compared to the pile head response.
