This paper looks at several alkyd resins made from hyperbranched polyols, and investigates soybean oil phosphate ester polyol (SOPEP) as a hyperbranched resin. SOPEP is a renewable resource derived from epoxidized soybean oil. Coating compositions based on hyperbranched alkyds and SOPEP were formulated and their film properties studied and compared with conventional alkyd resin coatings. The study reveals that use of SOPEP, like the hyperbranched alkyds, can significantly reduce VOC of the compositions with comparable performance.
