This paper has described a particular implementation of vocabularies as thesauri that can then be integrated into the workflow and tools involved in producing metadata. We believe this approach supports the accuracy and consistency in metadata that is a necessary part of establishing the value in metadata. To be more sure of this we recognise further issues need to be addressed, for example: 1. Testing and evaluation in large scale use. 2. Development of complete vocabularies within domains. 3. Promotion of the use of shared vocabularies through standards bodies. We feel that this approach has already shown itself to be of value at a small scale within our own projects, and hope that there will be wider adoption of this or similar systems.
