The results of field observations, post-earthquake analysis and analytical studies of somerecent destructive earthquakes consequences are presented.A gravitational collapse model is formulated. The model explains from one specific point ofview the severe damage and collapses of different structural systems. Among these systemsare reinforced concrete frame buildings, which collapsed during earthquakes in Armenia,1988, Turkey, 1999, and Taiwan, 1999.·Concrete block wall buildings collapsed during Neftegorsk-Sakhalin, Russia, 1995,earthquake.· Wooden wall buildings collapsed during the Kobe, Japan, 1995, earthquake.A parameter is formulated which limits the relationships values of gravitational loads (deadloads and other vertical loads) to the bearing capacity of the structural systems.
