Spectral Stiffness Microplane Model for Unidirectional Composites

The use of unidirectional (UD) composites for primary and secondary structuresis becoming broader and broader with applications including aeronautics and astronautics,automotive and bioengineering. However, the efficient use of these materialsrequires the development of proper computational tools for design. Leveraging thespectral stiffness decompostition of the stiffness tensor and a microplane formulation,the present contribution proposes a computational model to capture the maindamage and fracturing mechanisms in UD composites. Preliminary simulations ofuniaxial tests are compared to experimental data taken from the “World Wide FailureExercise” to investigate the predictive capability of the model.
