THE CALIBRATION OF MODIS OCEAN COLOR AND SEA SURFACETEMPERATURE PRODUCTS

Specific calibration and correction techniques have been used to develop ocean color andsea surface temperature (SST) products from the multispectral Moderate ResolutionImaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board the Terra satellite. These techniquesinclude the removal of artifacts in the ocean data that are particular to the MODISinstrument, the design of which includes multiple detectors per wave band and a dualsidedrotating scan mirror assembly. The calibration of the ocean color products wasaccomplished primarily by intercomparison of MODIS water-leaving radiancemeasurements with those from the time series of the Marine Optical Buoy (MOBY) andthe in situ data from the Marine Optical Characterization Experiments (MOCE). Both themid- and long-wavelength SST products were calibrated using skin SST measurementscollected by the Marine-Atmosphere Emitted Radiance Interferometer (M-AERI). Thesecalibrations have been repeated several times to adapt for those changes in instrumentand/or spacecraft electronics configuration that have taken place since Terra's launch inDecember 1999.
