THE CALIBRATION OF MODIS OCEAN COLOR AND SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURE PRODUCTS

Specific calibration and correction techniques have been used to develop ocean color and sea surface temperature (SST) products from the multispectral Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board the Terra satellite. These techniques include the removal of artifacts in the ocean data that are particular to the MODIS instrument, the design of which includes multiple detectors per wave band and a dualsided rotating scan mirror assembly. The calibration of the ocean color products was accomplished primarily by intercomparison of MODIS water-leaving radiance measurements with those from the time series of the Marine Optical Buoy (MOBY) and the in situ data from the Marine Optical Characterization Experiments (MOCE). Both the mid- and long-wavelength SST products were calibrated using skin SST measurements collected by the Marine-Atmosphere Emitted Radiance Interferometer (M-AERI). These calibrations have been repeated several times to adapt for those changes in instrument and/or spacecraft electronics configuration that have taken place since Terra's launch in December 1999.
